Don't worry, I haven't really. (This isn't the first instalment of one of those terminal-disease blogs.) The title will make sense when you've listened to the track below.

The past ten days have been extremely varied guitar playing-wise. At the beginning of last week I dusted down my jazz chops to record a video for YouTube, and a few days later I found myself at the other end of the spectrum attempting some fennesz-style guitar soundscapes.

I had written a blog a few weeks back about the nonine record label and their talented main man me raabenstein, and he subsequently asked me if I'd be interested in collaborating on a track. (Answer: Yes. Very.)

He asked for "distorted guitar sound doodles in the fennesz style", which is a style I like but have only seldom played around with before, so it was a long way outside my comfort zone. My main focus as a guitarist has always been primarily on the relationships between notes and chords rather than on the sonic qualities of those notes and chords, so concentrating purely on sound and timbre in this instance was a challenge!

My first attempt was too Frisell-like, with too many notes and melodies for this project, but my second try seemed to work with the track.

Here it is:

I enjoyed working in this style and we're going to try out a few more things with a view to maybe getting an EP together. In the meantime this track should hopefully be appearing on a future nonine compilation so remember, you heard it here first :)

Right, I'm off to add keyword metadata to this post: "bestwick", "worm", "head"...

Blog update: since posting this we now have a name for the collaboration, espen, and a logo:

Chris
