A few days ago I saw an article on TechCrunch about Stupeflix. They have an API that allows you to edit videos, photos and music and, being at a loose end, I thought I'd try using it to make a basic music video.

I had a track I'd made a while back called Parhelion. It's quite different from my other stuff, but I thought it would lend itself to an abstract, meditative treatment. (See, I've started using film-terms already.) The name was just a word I liked, but it has to do with a bright spot appearing at the side of the sun, so I took that as my inspiration for the video.

I used the Stupeflix XML editor to piece together stock photos and public domain and creative commons video clips. Since I knew absolutely nothing about XML when I started, and know only very slightly less than absolutely nothing now, this was a little challenging! At some points I thought it might have been quicker and technically easier to fly to the sun and film it myself. (There was lots of shouting "Stupeflix" in Homer's "Stupid Flanders" voice too :)

I don't make any great artistic claims for the finished video, but I think it shows a little of what can be done using the API.

Anyway, enough prevaricating; here it is:

In the unlikely event of anyone wanting to use it for anything, please note the Creative Commons Attribution License credits at the end.

OK, I'm off to renew my subscription to Cahiers du cinéma.

Á bientôt

Christophe
